Environmental Impact of the War on Gaza | Dr. Shabir Ally & Dr. Safiyyah Ally

Dr. Shabir Ally and Dr. Safiyyah Ally comment on a recent UN Environmental Program report which details the environmental devastation caused by the war on Gaza, termed by some as an "ecocide." They highlight the significant damage, including the destruction of 40% of trees and extensive farmland, pollution of water and soil with chemicals and untreated sewage, and the lasting consequences of unexploded bomb material. Dr. Shabir references the Geneva Conventions, noting that such environmental destruction violates international law and could be considered a war crime. He emphasizes the interconnectedness of the ecosystem, pointing out that the loss of trees and pollution affects both animals and humans who rely on these resources. Dr. Safiyyah explains that, according to Islamic teachings, humans are entrusted by God to protect the Earth and maintain its balance. The Quran instructs that all of creation follows God's system, and humans must not upset this balance. They call for prioritizing environmental reconstruction in Gaza alongside human rehabilitation efforts.
