Dr. Shabir Ally and Dr. Safiyyah Ally address a question about the fate of a family member who died by suicide and whether Allah can forgive them. Dr. Shabir explains that, according to the Quran, God is capable of forgiving all sins except for shirk (associating partners with God). Suicide, while a grave sin, is not considered shirk, and thus the deceased could still be forgiven by God. Dr. Shabir emphasizes that while forgiveness is ideally sought while alive through repentance and good deeds, God’s mercy may extend to those who have committed suicide due to mental distress. Additionally, he advises that relatives can perform good deeds on behalf of the deceased, such as prayers and charity, which could help in their forgiveness and offer comfort to the living. He says that we should leave judgments about individuals' ultimate fate to God, who is just and compassionate. Dr. Safiyyah notes that individuals who die by suicide are often not in a rational state of mind and suggests that God will take this into account. She emphasizes the importance of not judging others, as only God fully understands their situation and mental state.
